Consequently, any situation where the participant is involved simultaneously in listening to speech and in articulating speech may mimic an articulatorysuppression condition. In this study, the authors used articulatorysuppression, a technique that reduces working memory, to explore this question. However, they were affected differently by articulatorysuppression. In conclusion, our studies suggest that language related knowledge supports recall under articulatorysuppression conditions. Within each category of study material one list was studied under articulatorysuppression condition and the other under normal study conditions. Thus, we manipulated the study conditions (with or without articulatorysuppression) in three groups of participants: interpreters, high span individuals and control participants. Twenty participants transcribed six texts from one computer window to another, three of the texts with articulatorysuppression and three without. When participants were in the articulatorysuppression condition, they transcribed significantly more slowly and made significantly more errors than they did in the control condition. As mentioned before, the absence of articulatorysuppression in the interpreters could also be related to language knowledge and language activation. The balancing procedure was such that across participants the nonwords appeared an equal number of times in the control and articulatorysuppression conditions. Hence, we introduced a silent and an articulatorysuppression condition in a standard free recall task. Within each language 16 words were randomly assigned to the articulatorysuppression condition and 16 were assigned to the control condition. The highest spans achieved for the short and long word spans under articulatorysuppression were used in the subsequent analysis. However, when participants studied under articulatorysuppression conditions, the professional interpreters showed a higher degree of recall compared to the remaining groups. Therefore, the lack of articulatorysuppression effects in the interpreters may be due to an enhanced ability to coordinate processes and tasks. In the simultaneous condition, we would therefore expect decreased recall due to articulatorysuppression of the subvocal rehearsal process. Only spoken words were included because articulatorysuppression seems to interfere with the retrieval of the phonological representation of printed words, but not of spoken words. In fact, the articulatorysuppression effect was observed in both the high span and control group, even though their performance in the reading span test was significantly different. A small set of words used over and over, along with articulatorysuppression, may minimize the contribution of articulatory and passive phonological storage factors in recall.
