Coronation albums provided a valuable source for tracing the relationship between myth, scenarios, and ceremony. One "had one's carte done" and exchanged cards with friends and family, who glued them in commemorative albums. The relation between the album's musical techniques and its popular reception, however, has never been directly addressed. However, what the sociological perspective cannot answer is the question concerning the preference for certain albums. The album's primary objective was to catalog the differences between the forty groups it depicts. Prefaces to the albums also yield substantial information on their purposes and usefulness as envisioned by their makers. The tone of the prefaces to these later albums is more aggressive. Additionally, the hand-painted color illustrations set the albums apart. The albums can also be seen as documents that reflected as well as permitted increased control. Few albums can have come with such an extensive framing. Many postcards in public collections are still found in their original albums. Perhaps that unresolved dichotomy is itself part of the album's mystery. Despite the singularity of this album's music, it has been used with great regularity on television continuity sections. Thus, the authors were in a situation to already know about the album's standing as a classic and its widespread esteem. Many of these images are unpublished, having been rediscovered within private albums and personal collections. All four books are splendid albums which offer quality photography (including a selection of colour plates) and remarkably detailed commentary at a reasonable price. About thirty per cent of the albums were recorded in the 1970s, twenty per cent in the 1990s. There is no statistically significant difference in terms of the sales longevity of albums released by winners versus nominees. We thus now turn to look more directly at emergent forms of consumption, principally as embodied in a number of extremely popular compilation albums of current hits. If a visual representation of sameness and belonging encouraged identification with characters and with singers, it also presumably encouraged the acquisition of sheet music, albums and tickets. The program included selections from his seven studio albums, along with music from a number of theatrical productions and movie soundtracks, and two works in progress. Instead, fans eagerly discussed the prospects of the new album's commercial success, and were full of advice and concern about the most commercially promising selection and marketing of singles.
