The fact that organic fruit costs twice as much as inorganic fruit means greater profits and makes organic banana production a profitable agriculturalsystem. The key question facing each farmer is whether carbon payments are large enough to outweigh the upfront costs of transitioning to a new agriculturalsystem. This paper substantiates the latter position with a case study of an irrigated agriculturalsystem. One difficulty in doing this is that it requires identifying changes in the agriculturalsystem that will complement conservation and improve short-term profitability. The model we have presented is an agriculturalsystem model of the individual farm production decision maker. The results from the analysis of terrace adoption clearly show that altering the agriculturalsystem induces the adoption of terraces. These changes have come about from the interaction of multiple factors, which are often largely external to the agriculturalsystem itself. Although a new model of the agriculturalsystem is needed, current infrastructure is not equipped to handle this monumental change. These results show that adoption of conservation measures was positively associated with alterations in the agriculturalsystem. This could be indicative of a complementary between off-farm income and altering the agriculturalsystem. To induce conservation may require making the agriculturalsystem more profitable in the short-term. As the agriculturalsystem becomes more complex, this information will be increasingly important in guiding farmers. By the mid-1940s, managers were forced to recognize that the project had not introduced an agriculturalsystem that was sustainable in the long-run. Among those who altered their agriculturalsystem, 53.1 per cent had adopted terraces. However, changes in the agriculturalsystem gradually led to the subdivision of these large farms into numerous smaller family plots. It was identified as a relict of an earlier agriculturalsystem. When considering other crops, environmentalists and economists should emphasize similar systems that are capable of sequestering carbon and emerging as a sustainable agriculturalsystem. In an integrated agriculturalsystem, management decisions, such as type and amount of commodities to produce, are predetermined. Note that equation (1) includes a* as a dependent variable based on the hypothesis that alterations in the agriculturalsystem induce terrace adoption. It is the same criticism leveled at the agriculturalsystem since it became chemically dependent. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
