I have suggested that aestheticeducation can be interpreted in at least three ways and that each interpretation has different implications for practice. These are set alongside continuing debates about music as aestheticeducation, considerations of gender, world music and community music, and research into composing, improvising and listening. It can be therefore assumed that in the context of curriculum implementation, music teachers seek to pursue music education as aestheticeducation, following a traditional educational ideology, through musical activities. Many music teachers may have invoked the mantra 'music education is aestheticeducation' without understanding what the word 'aesthetic' means. Teachers of music are only too aware that the principles of aestheticeducation, in this broad inclusive sense, are absolutely fundamental to the implementation of curriculum programmes.
