in music, a tuning system (= a system to help a musical instrument to produce the correct sounds when played) in which the octave(= the distance between two musical notes that are eight notes apart) is divided into twelve intervals of equal size:

Equal temperament has been the accepted method of tuning keyboards for over two centuries.
