Each muscle is housed within its own fascial wrapping, or epimysium, which is richly innervated with sensory neurons. An increased tissue volume limited the stretching of connective tissue elements of the perimysium and epimysium. The outer layer of epimysium was composed of several wavy sheets of collagen fibres. Collagenous linkages between epimysia of adjacent muscles provide direct intermuscular connections.
