an old type of rose with simple pink flowers, many thorns(= small, sharp points on the stems), and a sweet smell like apples:
Eglantines are the European relation of Rosa primula and grow in British hedgerows.

From beneath the old oaks and eglantines came the cries of children.
The eglantine is better known as sweetbriar, and is very popular in English cottage gardens.
