In summary though, this is a useful volume which does fulfil the editor's aims. The book has three parts : a brief introduction and a useful overview of succeeding chapters by the editors. Neither editor is at fault, but it is another case where the ambiguity of the notation is lost in the precision of the modern edition. The difficulties faced by the editors poke through in several places. It does appear that the chapters contributed were of widely differing quality, something not effectively remedied by the editors. He acknowledged that newspaper editors had come to exercise their discretion to decide what to publish ' less wisely ' than they had done previously.
