The drug has shown good efficacy against larval ancylostomiasis. Interest in the unhealthy nature of underground work began in 1902 with a study of ankylostomiasis (hookworm), a parasitic infection of the small intestines amongst Cornish miners. Ancylostomiasis is one of the five major parasitic diseases in China. Ancylostomiasis was a bigger killer than cholera among workers in the Assam plantations. The majority of human ancylostomiasis cases are caused by the species Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus.
