The amphipods occurred mainly on the emerged areas. Under normal circumstances, the amphipods help to stabilise the substrate with their tube-building activity. Actual sample sizes are the numbers of amphipods harbouring at least enough worms to be included in the regression, and are given in parentheses. These tests were performed in complete ignorance of the infection status of individual amphipods, which was determined subsequently. Likewise, the year-round presence of cystacanths in amphipods revealed that the acanthocephalan infects fish throughout the year. Parasitized amphipods were generally found lower in the water column than control amphipods (fig. 2). There is, however, one very well-studied host- parasite association, between an intertidal amphipod and its trematode parasites, for which sufficient information is available. Three mermithids emerged from amphipods held in moist sand during our study and survived outside the host until their capture. Infected amphipods were grouped according to the number and species of acanthocephalan cystacanths they harboured. As the number of worms per amphipod increased, the relative sizes of the second-, third-, and fourth-longest worms per host increased markedly. Shaded squares indicate cells where amphipods were present, empty cells indicate those that were searched but amphipods were not found. Data on amphipod behaviour and infection levels did not conform to a normal distribution. Every day, each container was carefully scanned for dead amphipods. This may simply be due to the fact that they co-occurred in large amphipods, which tend to harbour more metacercariae of all kinds. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
