Broadly, it can be said that each gender had a dominant 'strong' declension. Words from other categories, such as nouns, adverbs and prepositions, do not inherit from declension and its subtypes. The declensions often have more than one ending for a particular case, so further subdivisions are necessary within each major paradigm. The task, therefore, is to explain why the derived nouns don't enter one of the standard noun declensions. For the masculine and neuter nouns, this was the a-stem declension while for feminine nouns the o-stems represented the dominant declension.
