This year has seen the country's first current account surplus in a decade. Examples of current accountcurrent account Table 6 shows the currentaccount from 1990 to 1999. The currentaccount deficits not only depleted gross official foreign reserves but also involved an accumulation of external debts. The deterioration in the net foreign asset position is then followed by a currentaccount surplus. The currentaccount balance seeks to take into account that deficits may require, for example, higher interest rates than in a counterfactual scenario. That did not help currentaccount and official reserves too much, but was partly the cause for much weaker disinflation in that time. This conclusion is reinforced by the behaviour of the trade and currentaccount balances. The currentaccount then adjusts nonmonotonically if the speed of adjustment of habits is higher than the speed of adjustment of the capital stock. The opportunity for a successful switch may also be improved to the degree that the economy is protected from problems on the currentaccount. It guarantees that the initial (equilibrium) level of the currentaccount will be regained in the new steady state. However, the consequent overvaluation tends to generate unsustainable currentaccount deficits that only continued inflows of capital can finance. In fact, our contribution complements two studies that propose a new explanation of deficit-surplus sequence of the currentaccount using an intertemporal-maximizing framework. The currentaccount surplus accompanied by the surge in capital inflows in the mid-1990s put too much strain on that strategy. This intertemporal constraint imposes an additional constraint on the evolution of the economy, determining the stable adjustment of the currentaccount. These market entries result in a remanent positive effect on the currentaccount. Therefore, the currentaccount will be more affected the shorter-lasting is the perturbation.
