Hyperventilation in an anxious patient will cause respiratory alkalosis. Persistent vomiting can lead to dehydration, severe alkalosis, and bleeding. Chloride depletion in patients with vomiting is a common cause of metabolic alkalosis. The opposite of acidosis is alkalosis, in which there is too high a pH due to excess base or insufficient acid in the body.
