In the Upper Devonian period, club mosses and horsetails grew to great heights. These plants are very ancient and have features of conifers, flowering plants, and club mosses. The plant is known as club moss because of the shape of the organ that produces the spores. In the hot, damp swamps of the carboniferous period 350 to 300 million years ago, giant club mosses dominated the vegetation. Ferns and club mosses continued the tree-like growth of the Devonian period, when the moderate climate became warmer.
