This balanced perspective on the impact of this novel could increase capacity in a service stretched to provide adequate cisplatin provision. The first cisplatin analog to be developed was carboplatin. The toxicity profile mirrored that of cisplatin alone with the most common toxicities being cytopenias (n 10), nausea/vomiting (n 9), and asthenia (n 5). Clinical trials have since established cisplatin in lung, ovarian, esophageal, cervical, head and neck and germ cell cancers. For this reason, cisplatin-induced emesis has become the human model by which antiemetic regimens are evaluated (7). Like other traditional chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin has untoward side-effects (nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, and neuropathy) and clinical drug resistance does occur. Acute emesis usually begins 2 to 4 hours after cisplatin administration and peaks at 6 hours (23;26). Unfortunately, carboplatin shows a marked degree of cross-resistance when compared to cisplatin. Epidermal growth factor receptor pathway analysis identifies amphiregulin as a key factor for cisplatin resistance of human breast cancer cells. The results of our study show that cisplatin has no effect on either minisatellite mutations or crossover frequencies during the most important stages of mouse spermatogenesis. In the case of antineoplastic agents such as paclitaxel, cisplatin and thalidomide, the neuropathy is dose-dependent and doselimiting; patients often cannot tolerate the doses necessary to treat the underlying cancer. Carboplatin costs £205.71 against £17.90 for cisplatin, but the total treatment costs are reduced from £347.90 to £228.77. From the Hansard archive Example from the Hansard archive.
