Detailed vegetation or ecological maps exist for some areas, although these are usually rather limited spatially and very far from being able to give a circumpolar perspective. Such maps, if they are to have circumpolar coverage, can only feasibly be produced on a routine basis using satellite imagery having wide swaths but comparatively coarse resolution.
