a type of large insect from New Zealand, with long legs with spines(= sharp points) on them. There are many different species(= types) of wētā, most of which do not have wings:
Wētā range in size, but, with their big bodies and spiny legs, they are one of New Zealand's most recognizable creepy-crawlies.
There are several species of the insect, the most impressive being the giant weta, which is the heaviest insect in the world, weighing up to 71g.
Wetas are a group of around 70 species of large insect from New Zealand, related to grasshoppers and crickets.
One of the oldest of New Zealand's unique creatures inhabits caves and rock crevices above the snow line: the weta - an insect that has changed little in 190 million years.
Many species of wētā are threatened or endangered.
