Wetas are a group of around 70 species of large insect from New Zealand, related to grasshoppers and crickets. One of the oldest of New Zealand's unique creatures inhabits caves and rock crevices above the snow line: the weta - an insect that has changed little in 190 million years. Many species of wētā are threatened or endangered.
