Wernicke aphasia, caused by lesions in the Wernicke area, is characterized by fluent speech that has normal speed and rhythm, but is filled with incorrect words. Oral spelling is probably dependent on Wernicke's area. Certain types of aphasia are caused by damage to the connections of Broca's or Wernicke's areas to each other, or to other parts of the brain. The temporal speech comprehension region is referred to as Wernicke's area. It is a fibre tract connecting cortical areas, involved in a wide range of functions including language processing, thanks to its connections to Broca and Wernicke areas.
