any large organ inside the body, such as the heart, stomach, lungs, or intestines:
Rupture of a viscus can lead to peritonitis, with subsequent sepsis and death.

Hernia is protrusion of all or part of the viscus through the wall that contains it.
The viscus may be perforated by direct or indirect injury.
