In this disease, the villi of the intestinal mucosa are destroyed and the absorptive surface consequently reduced. Fusion of the precursor trophoblast of the placenta with the allantois is followed by invasion of mesenchyme thereby transforming primary villi into secondary villi. At this stage, the villi are already lined with a functional epithelium exhibiting most of the typical characteristics of the small intestine. Large areas of the intestine contained mis-shapen villi composed of numerous, small, closely-packed cells.
