Some smaller cavities, or larger cavities with restricted access to the unconformity, were apparently filled by sediment that trickled down into the fissure system. Such a major unconformity changed the depositional profile considerably. The unconformity would thus represent a quiescent interval of perhaps 90 ka. Amphibolites from the unconformity (site 2) have only poorly stable magnetizations. The angular unconformity below this flow attests to a period of erosion during which the older succession was worn down to form a seaward palaeoslope. Unconformity and the tuff layer is estimated to be a few hundreds of metres (section is only partially exposed). The basal unconformity is undulating and can be traced intermittently for 2-3 km in the southeast outcrops. This sample was collected approximately 15 m above the unconformity. The hiatus associated with the unconformity is probably of minor magnitude and as such is not reflected by a clear break in the palynological record. Either way, the basal sandstones and conglomerates were clearly deposited as a shallow marine transgression across a terrestrial unconformity surface. The unconformity is best developed at basin margins and on uplifted intrabasinal fault-blocks. It is situated 70 m above the unconformity. This suggests that this unconformity may be of regional extent. Its relationship to the unconformity is not exposed, but it displays the field and petrological characteristics of this group.
