Delinquency was operationalized in terms of the total frequency of various deviant behaviors ranging from truancy at school to violence intending serious injury. Some parents did not tolerate truancy and found fault with it. In neither case are these extremes: very few respondents even with the highest rates of relocation have very low scores or report very frequent truancy. Interpersonal callousness is often already apparent in childhood, while tobacco use and truancy often become apparent in late childhood or early adolescence. Five of the six factors were deviant child behaviors (such as high tobacco and alcohol use, drug selling, interpersonal callousness, and truancy) while the remaining factor was high peer delinquency. Finally, girls with early conduct problems were more prone to problems with school authorities such as school truancy, compared to girls with low rates of early conduct problems. Parallel to the measure of truancy, sample members were also asked whether over the past year they had been suspended from school for any reason.
