Despite extensive use of percussion in his orchestral works, from the 1940s onwards, timpani are notable by their absence from his music. A dreamy synthesizer supplies an affirmative upward cadence in a major key, and, following another two-note upwards progression on timpani, a cymbal crescendo softly sounds. Once again he dispenses with the full orchestra, scoring for brass, timpani, percussion and strings. But something goes wrong; the house is dark and disarrayed, and we begin to hear sinister music and a timpani figure in a low bass register.
