The calcrete is of two types; the first one is rich in silt with low clay content, and generally overlies the mottled silty sandstone lithofacies. These deposits are prone to diagenetic changes, especially development of calcrete horizons due to the alkaline nature of the water and its saturation in calcite. The second type of bedded calcrete is composed of very thin non-calcretized silty bands alternating with 2-3 cm thick calcretized clayey bands. This lithofacies shows development of small calcrete nodules having diameters of a few to ten millimetres. The silty-heterolithic association consists of four lithofacies: mottled siltstone, mottled silty sandstone, bedded calcrete and mottled mudstone. The mottled silty sandstone facies is overlain by bedded calcrete. The topmost parts of the sandy silt units show extensive calcrete development. Irregularly shaped calcrete nodules are often present. Calcrete nodules and gastropod moulds are also present. Often horizons of bedded calcrete are encountered. The section includes calcrete profiles and a complex sand-body. From Wikipedia This example is from Wikipedia and may be reused under a CC BY-SA license.
