noun[ C or U ]
uk /əˈbiː.li.ə/ us /əˈbiː.li.ə/pluralabelias or abelia
a type of evergreen bush (= one that does not lose its leaves) often grown in gardens, with dark green leaves and groups of white, red, or pink bell-shaped flowers:
The flowerbeds were planted with a collection of abelias, camelias, and rhododendrons that were a riot of colour when in flower.
Abelia is not just tough, it is also beautiful.
When established, abelia are very drought tolerant plants.
The most widely cultivated abelia is Abelia grandiflora, which can grow up to 8 feet tall.
The abelia is named after a Dr Abel, a nineteenth-century English botanist.
This variety of abelia has clusters of white bell-shaped flowers that have a pale pink tinge to them.
