to wait

These words refer to stopping what you are doing and staying in one place until something else happens or someone arrives.

The most common verb for this is wait. Wait implies that you have stopped a process or activity because another thing needs to happen first.

If you are expecting someone or something to arrive, or something to happen, you can use the phrasal verb wait for.

In formal contexts, await means the same as wait for.

Stay and, in slightly more formal contexts, remain are used when someone waits in a place until something else happens.

Stay there until I get back.
Please remain in your seats until the plane has come to a complete stop.

If you want to tell someone to wait, you can use the phrase hang on.

Hang on, I'll be ready in a minute.

If people are waiting in a place, usually for no obvious reason, you can use the informal phrasal verb hang around or the verb loiter.

A bunch of men were loitering outside the pub.

If people are waiting in a line to buy something, the verb line up is used.
