These words refer to moving your hand or another object with force, and usually quickly and intentionally, so that it touches a person or thing.

The most common word for this, and the word with the broadest use, is hit. Hit usually implies that a person's hand or an object held or thrown by a person touches a person intentionally and with force. If you hit someone and it is an accident, you usually use the word accidentally to describe this.


She was expelled for hitting another pupil.
He swung the door open and accidentally hit her with it.
That pitch was intended to hit the batter.

Whack means the same as hit but is slightly more informal.
