to forbid someone or something


These words all describe a situation where someone is not allowed to do something, or something is not allowed to happen or exist.

One of the most common words for this is forbid. Forbid is used when someone in a position of authority or power does not allow something to happen, or makes it impossible for that thing to happen. Forbid is a strong word.


He grew up in a strict household where dating was forbidden.
In the past, laws forbade people of colour from owning property.

Two very common opposites of forbid are allow and let. Allow is slightly more formal and official than let.


The law in that country allows teenagers over 16 to consume alcohol.
His father let him go out with his friends.

If something is disallowed, a person or group in authority has reviewed it and decided it is not allowed anymore. Disallow is slightly formal in tone and is used often in sport or in legal contexts.


Upon review, the goal was disallowed.
The trial judge disallowed the testimony of the expert witness.

The verbs ban, prohibit or outlaw can be used to talk about officially forbidding something using a rule or law. These words often appear in newspapers, or in official documents.


The government has banned the sale of lead-based paint.
Vehicles are prohibited from parking on the grass.
The new law outlaws smoking in public places.

In less formal language, you can say that an authority or a law has made something illegal. Something that has been made illegal is not allowed to happen and becomes a crime.


The new law made discrimination on the basis of gender illegal.

If someone uses official authority to forbid something, the verb veto can be used.


Their proposal was vetoed by the council.

If you forbid someone from taking part in an activity, especially because that person has done something wrong, you can use the verbs disqualify or bar.


She was disqualified from the competition for cheating.
The incident led to him being barred from playing for the rest of the season.
