to explain something


These words mean to make something clear or easy to understand by describing or giving information about it.

One of the most common words for this, and the word with the broadest meaning, is explain.


Can you explain that again?
I explained to him that I wasn't going to be able to make it because of work.

If someone is explaining something in order to make it easier for someone else to understand, you can use the verb clarify.


Let me just clarify what I mean here.

The verb define is sometimes used when explaining exactly what something means. Define is often used in official contexts.


Your responsibilities are clearly defined in the contract.

If something is being explained clearly in writing, the phrasal verb set out is sometimes used. In formal contexts, you can also use set forth to talk about things that are explain in writing.


Your contract will set out the terms of your employment.
The terms of the statute are set forth in Section I, Article 3.

If something is being explained in great detail, the phrasal verb spell out is often used.


They sent me a letter spelling out the details of the agreement.

In formal contexts, if you must explain the reason for something or the cause of something, you can use the phrasal verb account for.


Can you account for your actions on the night of 13 May?
The treasurer must account for the missing money or be brought up on charges of theft.
I cannot account to our guests for his rude behaviour this evening.
