These words all refer to using your teeth to crush food into smaller pieces.

The word chew is the most common word for this. You can use chew to refer to breaking food into smaller pieces so you can swallow it, or using your teeth to break up food so you can taste it without swallowing it.


Make sure you chew your food thoroughly.
You are not allowed to chew gum in class.

The word bite is used to refer to cutting into something using the teeth at the front of your mouth. Bite can be used with chew to show the two different processes involved in breaking food down in your mouth. Bite is also used of things that are not food, but which you cut using your teeth, such as your fingernails.


She bit into the apple.
He bit off a hunk of bread and chewed it thoughtfully.

Nibble means to eat something by taking many small bites. It's used especially of small animals like mice.


She nibbled on peanuts while waiting for her dinner to cook.
The hamster was nibbling a piece of lettuce.
The mice had nibbled a hole in the cereal box.

Munch and crunch are used to describe eating or chewing food loudly. Chomp is an informal way of describing noisy chewing.


He munched popcorn throughout the whole film.
She was crunching on an apple.
He crunched into the celery.
He was chomping a chocolate bar.
He chomped on his gum, smacking his lips together.

Gnaw means to keep biting or chewing something so that at it disappears or is destroyed. It does not always refer to eating.


The dog was gnawing a bone.

Masticate is used in medical and scientific writing to refer to chewing.


The patient experienced jaw pain when masticating.
