to be absent


Something or someone that is absent is not in the place you are talking about. You can also use absent when something is not in a place that you expect it to be.


If you are absent from work for more than three days, you must provide a medical certificate.

When someone is AWOL, or absent without leave, they have left the place where they are supposed to be without permission. This expression is used of soldiers.

The opposite of absent is present.
