These words mean to not allow yourself to do or be involved in something.

The most commonly used word is avoid.


Avoid swimming in areas where sharks are known to congregate.

If someone evades something, they manage to avoid or escape from it. This is a formal word, and is often used to talk about avoiding doing what you should do, or avoiding fair punishment for what you have done.

Dodge is a more informal word meaning evade.

If you sidestep or shirk a duty or responsibility, you avoid it. Shirk is a disapproving word.
