to argue with someone


These words mean to speak angrily to someone, telling that person that you disagree with them.

The most commonly used word is argue. You can also say have an argument.


The kids are always arguing about something.
I had an argument with my sister.

You can also use fight with this meaning. Fight is informal.


The two sides continue to fight over control of the assembly.

Quarrel and row have a similar meaning but are used mainly when the people know each other well. Row is informal and used mainly in UK English.

If people disagree, they do not have the same opinion. You can also say that people dispute something.

When people fall out, they argue and stop being friendly with each other. Fall out is informal.


Have you fallen out with your boyfriend again?

If people refuse to speak to each other, you can say they are not on speaking terms.


The couple haven’t been on speaking terms for many years.
