These words refer to people who do not say much or speak often.

One common word for this is quiet. Quiet people do not talk very much or do not talk often.


She's a quiet little thing.
He's so quiet I can hardly get a word out of him.

The opposite of quiet is talkative.


Her little boy is so talkative you can hardly get a word in!

A person who is quiet and does not often talk very much can be described as taciturn. Taciturn implies that a person does not talk because they are thought to be unfriendly.


Her father was a shy, taciturn man.

If someone uses too few words in a way that seems rude or unfriendly, you can call them abrupt.


He is criticised for being too abrupt with his clients.

You can also use curt, terse, or short for people who do not say much, but when they do say things, are very rough and unfriendly in how they say it.


She was very curt with him.
I don't appreciate how terse she is in meetings.
I'm sorry I was so short with you, but I was under a lot of stress.

In more formal language, someone who is laconic does not use many words at all to express what they are thinking. In less formal language, you can say this person does not waste words.


My uncle has quite a laconic wit.
She doesn't waste words - if she agrees with you, she'll just say that.
