释义 | not availableThese words are all used when you are not available to do something or talk to someone. The most common word for this, and the word with the broadest meaning, is busy. Busy implies that you have other things planned and that is why you are unavailable. I'm busy all morning - can we meet up in the afternoon? I'm sorry, but according to her schedule, she's busy with meetings today. The opposite of busy is free. I can meet any time on Monday - I'm free all day. If you are tied up, you are not available because you are doing other things, usually meetings. Tied up is common in business contexts. I'll be tied up in meetings until 3.00pm, but could meet after that. I can meet on Thursday, but I'm completely tied up the rest of the week. Unavailable is also used in business contexts to say that you are busy with something else. The CEO is currently unavailable - may I take a message? The opposite of unavailable is available. Unavailable is much more common than available in this use. "Can you come to the meeting?" "Yes, I'm available." In formal contexts, if you are not able to do something because you have something else planned, you can say you are engaged. Engaged generally refers to social plans and not work plans. I can't come to tea - I'm engaged elsewhere. In UK English, if you cannot do something because you are doing something else, you can say that you have (got) something on. Have (got) something on is usually used of social plans. UKI'll have to miss the party - I have something on that night. Related articleshaving a lot to do full of activity too full of vehicles |
