These words are all used to describe people or organizations that do not achieve wealth, popularity, or success in what they do.

A common word for this is unsuccessful. Unsuccessful is used specifically to describe things that people do or the jobs that they take on.


He tried for years to get his work published before accepting he was a commercially unsuccessful writer.
She tried to swim the Channel but was unsuccessful.
The energy company tried to branch out into manufacturing appliances, but they were unsuccessful.

One opposite of unsuccessful is successful. Like unsuccessful, successful is used to describe the things that people do or the jobs they take on.

 Usage


When used with this meaning, failed and frustrated can only be used before a noun.

He was a failed actor.

Not: The actor failed.

She was a frustrated farmer who turned to business.

Not: The farmer was frustrated and turned to business.


If someone is trying to succeed, especially in a job, but they keep failing, you can say they are struggling.


The struggling actor was cut from yet another film.

 Usage


When used with this meaning, struggling can only be used before a noun.

She was a struggling writer.

Not: The writer is struggling


There are several ways to describe people who are trying to become wealthy, popular, or successful but are likely to fail. If someone is doing something very badly and so will likely fail, you can say they are on the ropes or that they will not last long. On the ropes is informal. In UK English, you can say that something will not last long or not last five minutes.


After that scandal, the MP is really on the ropes.
With that temper, he's not going to last long as a teacher.

If a person was once successful, wealthy, or popular, and now they are not but they keep trying to be, you can describe them as washed up.


He's just a washed-up country singer.
She was once the most sought-after model in the world, but she's all washed up.

If a romatic relationship is failing, you can informally say that the people in the relationship, or the relationship itself, is on the rocks.


The singer and her husband are on the rocks.
The tabloids are reporting that their cosy relationship is on the rocks.
