having moisture in the air


These words describe places or weather where there is moisure in the air but it is not raining.

The most common word for this, and the word with the broadest use, is humid. Humid is used to describe air, either outside or inside a place, that has enough moisutre in it that you can feel it.


It gets so humid in this part of the country.
You don't want the room to get too humid or the floorboards will warp.

Two opposites of humid are dry and arid. Dry is often used to describe the air inside or outside, and arid is used to describe a climate or a place.


It gets so dry in our house during the winter.
We moved to an arid climate because too much humidity makes my asthma worse.

If there is lots of moisture in the air and it is unpleasantly warm, you can say that it is muggy or sultry. Both of these words are used to describe air outside. Sultry is used for air that holds less moisture in it, and muggy is used for air that holds more moisture in it.

She kept her bedroom window open to cool off during these long, sultry summer nights.

When air has a lot of moisture in it and feels unpleasantly hot, you can use the word sticky to describe it, or to describe weather where the air is sticky.


It's going to be rather sticky outside, with the humidity level at almost 85 per cent and temperatures in the high 20s.

Air that is cool and has moisture in it that you can feel in an unpleasant way can be called clammy or dank. Dank is usually used of the air inside buildings or other covered spaces. Clammy can be used of air outside or inside, and it can also be used to describe weather.


It's another cold, clammy day on the coast.
It was dark and dank in the catacombs.

When air has so much moisture in it that you can see it, you can say it is misty or foggy. Misty air has enough moisture in it that it is hard to see things clearly in the distance through the moisture. Foggy air has so much moisture in it that it forms a cloud that sits on the ground and is very hard to see through.


It was misty this morning when we left on our journey.
It was too foggy for us to even see across the street.
