feeling hot


These words are all used to say that you feel uncomfortable because the temperature is high.

The most common word for this feeling is hot. Hot can be used when the temperature outside is so high it makes you uncomfortable, or when you have something wrong with you that makes your skin feel hotter than it should.


Are you too hot? I can turn on the air.
Your forehead feels hot - do you have a fever?

The opposite of hot is cold.


Brr, I'm cold!

If you feel hot because you have a fever, you can say you are feverish.


She's been feverish all morning.

If you are overheated, you feel so hot, usually from exercise or from being out in the heat, that you are unwell. Overheated is not used when you feel hot because of an illness.


I didn't drink enough water before I went out sunbathing, and now I'm overheated.

If you feel very hot, you can say that you are roasting, sweltering or, in informal contexts, boiling.


Turn the heating down - I'm roasting!
Sweltering, she kicked off the bedcover.
I'm positively boiling in this wool jumper.

If you feel warm, you do not feel cold and you are comfortable. You can also use the word toasty to refer to being pleasantly warm and comfortable.


I'm nice and warm here by the fire.
We were quite toasty in our sleeping bags though it was a cold night.
