These words all refer to materials or things such as glass or water that are easy to see through.

One of the most common words for this is clear. Clear is most often used of water or other liquids, but it can also be used of manufactured items or materials like plastic that are used in building or making things. Clear also implies that the material or water has no colour to it.


The water in the bay was so clear I could see the bottom.
Your duty-free purchases must be placed in a clear plastic bag.

When used of glass or plastic, the opposite of clear is frosted. Frosted glass or plastic is treated so that you cannot see through it.


The shower doors are made of frosted glass.

The word transparent can also refer to materials that you can see through, but it is used of materials like cloth or plastic. Transparent things can also have colour.


The secondhand shop was selling a vintage serving tray made of transparent red plastic.
That shirt is practically transparent!

In more informal contexts, you can use the adjective see-through to refer to something that you can see through. See-through is most often used of clothing.


Make sure that shirt isn't see-through when it gets wet.
I like that the container has a see-through lid.

Cloth that is so light and delicate that you can see through it is called sheer.


The model wore a sheer blouse under the jacket.
I like these sheer curtains.

The opposite of sheer is opaque.


I need a pair of black opaque tights.

In literary contexts, cloth that is sheer can also be called diaphanous.


She wore a diaphanous gown and a circlet of gold on her brow.

Very clear water can be described as crystal clear.


The lake was crystal clear.

There are many opposites of clear. Water that is not clear can be called murky, cloudy or, in formal contexts, turbid. Murky and turbid are often used of rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds. Cloudy can be used of any liquid, but especially liquids you drink.


No one knows what lives in the murky depths of the lake.
I didn't expect the water coming out of the tap to be cloudy.
The ale was cloudy.
This species of fish survives best in turbid water.

If something is translucent, it is almost transparent, allowing some light through in an attractive way. Translucent is often approving.


Cook the onions until they are translucent.
The shed was roofed with translucent plastic panels.
