We compared resource availability, bromeliad growth and productivity, and animal diversity in bromeliad microcosms in three forest types along an elevational gradient. It suggests that their role in the release of nutrients from particulates may be essential for epiphytic bromeliad growth. Thus, protozoa may be key organisms in bromeliad microcosms when large amounts of organic matter are present. They will be less important in the tabonuco, where bromeliad densities are very low. The bromeliad showed a flexible breeding system with autogamy occurring in addition to cross-pollination. The bromeliad microcosm is, therefore, a unique habitat contributing to forest diversity and food chains. Focal observations on each bromeliad species were made to determine the hummingbird visitors. Animal biomass is small relative to bromeliad debris stocks (< 0.5% in all forests), but with the proportion increasing with elevation. The bromeliad habitat provides stable long-term conditions in which many generations of invertebrates can breed. Neither species richness nor abundance of hummingbirds were related to bromeliad phenology. We quantified flowering bromeliad species by walking each trail and recording all bromeliads within view that had active inflorescences. During the dry season the tabonuco forest can suffer severe drought, with consequent checks to bromeliad growth. Bromeliads were collected from each of the three forest types and separated into four components: live bromeliad tissue, and coarse, medium and fine debris. Second, we expected to find a clear effect of the propagule supply on the structure and composition of epiphytic bromeliad communities in forest stands.
