Bones may be joined either by a synarthrosis that allows little or no motion between them, or by a diarthrosis that permits them to move freely. In a synarthrosis, the mesenchymal tissue between the adjacent bones may form dense connective tissue. Synarthroses include skull sutures, the articulations between the teeth and the mandible, and the joint found between the first pair of ribs and the sternum.
