Information about the light/dark cycle is transmitted from the retina to the paired suprachiasmatic nuclei in the hypothalamus. Cycles of light and dark are what keep the suprachiasmatic nucleus properly set so that you will go to sleep at 11 and wake up at 7. Melatonin secretion is regulated by a rhythm-generating system located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, which is in turn regulated by light. The output from the circadian pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus helps govern sleep propensity.
