释义 | substantia nigra noun[ Cusually singular ] anatomy specializeduk /səbˌstæn.ʃi.ə ˈnaɪ.ɡrə/ us /səbˌstæn.ʃi.ə ˈnaɪ.ɡrə /pluralsubstantiae nigraeuk /səbˌstæn.ʃi.ə ˈnaɪ.ɡri/ us /səbˌstæn.ʃi.ə ˈnaɪ.ɡri/ a layer of dark-coloured cells in the midbrain that produce the chemical dopamine that helps the body to control smooth movements: Parkinson's is caused by a lack of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the substantia nigra, an area of the brain that controls balance and movement. A previous study measured the enzyme activity in the cells of the substantiae nigrae of adult cats and monkeys. There is some evidence that dopamine works together with other chemicals in the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra feeds nerve fibres, which carry dopamine, to the part of the brain associated with movement. Loss of pigmented cells in the substantia nigra is the most consistent finding in Parkinson's disease.
