a light air-filled part that sticks out from the sides or ends of a boat or ship and makes it less likely to lean to one side:
There were rowing boats at the lake and they also provided an 18-foot sponson canoe.
The boat suffered damage to its right sponson.
Open canoes are frequently supplied with sponsons running along the sides from bow to stern.
The sponsons absorbed the impact of the waves, calming the sea around the boat.
Narrow sponsons on either side of the boat provide buoyancy and keep the boat level.
