Yet a closer reading of his text reveals an uncomfortable number of instances of what might be termed specialpleading. Quite so, but all the relevant chapters on the origin of life show how the entire area is dogged by incomplete arguments and specialpleading. It will take no specialpleading to argue that another was race. This is not specialpleading, the guidelines suggested, this is general pleading. Some specialpleading is required to decide between the two possibilities. In hindsight, what may seem the most peculiar is the degree of specialpleading that has accompanied some claims for cryptic intervals of evolution. And familiarity will surely engender popularity: the music needs no specialpleading. Yet despite these differences, both fall into the same trap of specialpleading when it comes to extrapolating their favourite mechanism into a universal principle. They seem to call for specialpleading, an extra effort to legitimise their existence, to demonstrate their dramatic relevance. Managing such equity-efficiency trade-offs on the basis of intuition is unsatisfactory in a democracy, as it arouses suspicions of specialpleading and favoritism toward vested interests. To maintain otherwise is simply specialpleading. Of course, at one level, interdisciplinary discussion is all to the good, but it is not merely specialpleading to have hoped for a greater contribution from historians. Despite much specialpleading all around, these claims don't obviously decide between the feuding interpretations just mentioned, though that doesn't mean that such passages are equally friendly to all sides.
