Those looking for a single clear and internally consistent set of rules to guide modern performers of eighteenth-century sonatas are once again out of luck. Yet this conclusion causes problems in the context of what we understand about the sonata in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His sonatas show great concern with virtuosity of the bow, alternating sequential patterns with the articulation of ornaments. At the start, in the eighteenth century, development was a small part of the sonata. It started life as a single-span sonata but is formally unconvincing as a stand-alone work. Many parts of the interior of this circle are shared among different sonatas, since the same ideas are reused several times. Elsewhere, in the first movements of the trio and the sonata, their gradation of dynamic is often finely judged and is sometimes accompanied with rubato. In quantitative terms, the surviving works are heavily dominated by concertos and related genres (sinfonie, chamber concertos and sonatas). It has, however, the merit of coupling the concerto with the three completed movements of a posthumous cello sonata, composed ten years later. To me, the song cycle is as important a medium as the instrumental sonata. Or, more alarmingly, that it is in sonata form? What do pieces like these have to do with sonata form? It would nevertheless also be plausible to place both pieces in the sonata form category. Even the sonata form is included in the primary school final year's textbook, together with various trends of the 20th century history of music.
