These data, however, were based on self-report and did not include manic symptoms. A different picture emerged using the self-report measures where significant differences were seen in all dimensions except paternal authoritarianism. First, only three dimensions of psychosis were considered suitable for inclusion in the self-report scale. These different dimensions are also differently represented in self-report, making convergence an empirical question rather than an expectation. The patients (all premorbidly right-handed, based on self-report) were diagnosed on the basis of a series of diagnostic tests and clinical reports. The outcome measures in the trial were all validated, although it should be noted that all were self-report measures, and there was no observer-rated measure. We are not aware of any study that has validated this type of self-report data. If such self-report measures had been available, they could have importantly served as time-varying covariates of maternal reported symptoms from ages 5 to 11.
