The Schwann cell spirals around, enclosing the axon in many layers of its plasma membrane. This may prove to be important in understanding the remarkable plasticity of Schwann cells, both in development and after nerve injury. It is a type of benign brain tumour that begins in the Schwann cells. The characteristic interaction of Schwann cells with axons is disrupted in this type of tumour of the peripheral nervous system.
