The lower part of the formation is often metamorphosed and deformed into strongly magnetic mica schists. The magnetization in the schist and the sandstone is interpreted to be a chemical remanant magnetization caused by the same fluids that precipitated the veins. Metasedimentary samples from the southeastern portion are represented by graphite schist and metapelite. The most common type is garnet-biotite schist consisting of biotite, garnet, feldspar and accessory zircon. The schist is composed mainly of biotite, plagioclase and quartz, whereas granulitite consists mainly of quartz, plagioclase and biotite. In schist intercalations within the marbles mineral assemblages include chlorite, calcite, albite, phengite and quartz. The soils are well drained and derived from schist. The magnetization in the veins, schist and sandstones is interpreted to have been acquired when the haematite was precipitated. These zones show the effects of intense alteration: the granite is transformed into a quartz-sericite-andalusite schist. The contact between granite and schist is intrusive, generally cross-cutting a pre-existing schistosity. The schists are dark bluish grey, fine-grained with a high quartz content (> 60 vol. %) and possess a continuous schistosity.
