A suballuvial bench may have formed through retreat of the western fault scarp. This scenario requires extensive scarp retreat to produce a suballuvial bench for a fan whose apex was 30 km to the west. The reserve comprises a species-rich coastal scarp forest (2611 ha) set in a mosaic of coastal grassland and rocky granitic outcrops (1277 ha). The sedimentary breccias were probably formed from talus and/or other types of colluvium that were shed from the ring-fracture fault scarp of the caldera. This is commonly because of rapid burial of the fault scarps under contemporaneous lava flows. The conglomerates that predominate in the lowest parts of both groups imply the presence of fault scarps at the surface. Birds of prey nest on rock scarps and in canyons that are difficult to access. The fault scarps measured are usually characterized by smooth, polished surfaces with well-preserved slickensides and fibres. However, the welldefined eastern edge of the central plateau, for about 3 km further to the southwest, is collinear with the exposed fault scarp. In the absence of contemporaneous sedimentary deposits draping a growing fault scarp or of intrusive bodies with complex crosscutting relationships, no conclusive answer to this question is possible. Whatever the cause, this scarp provides the only radial cross-section into the interior of the island and is therefore likely to expose some of the oldest (stratigraphically lowermost) accessible outcrops. Measurements were made on outcrops of fault scarps ranging from a few centimetres to several metres in size, often related to much larger fault scarps that were inaccessible. Finally, the consideration of species richness and the putative processes influencing regeneration in gaps has practical significance for the use of coastal scarp forest by local people. Coarse clastic deposits are abundant within it, mainly close to the basin edges, and a number of alluvial fans can be recognized in association with fault scarps.
